Are You Thriving Or Surviving?

During times of stress--whether that be a worldwide pandemic, grieving a lost loved one, or even just a change in routine--we will often transition to a mindset of ‘survival mode’. Though this may be effective for a momentary challenge, it isn’t a sustainable way to deal with unexpected challenges.

Survival mode may keep us alive, but what if we could do better? To do so, we first must know how to recognize when we are in survival mode, and how to overcome it step by step.

What does survival mode look like?

When we’re stressed, we can fall into a “survival mode” where we feel like we’re just getting by. Our mental and emotional reserves are down to fumes, and just getting up in the morning can feel like a marathon. Much like a smartphone on 1%, we simply can’t operate like this; everything is slower, harder, and down to the wire.

Survival mode isn’t always obvious. If you’re in survival mode, you may be feeling some of the following:

  • You find it difficult to focus.

  • You might be jumpy, or zoned out, and  withdrawn.

  • You are having a  hard time remembering things.

  • You feel drained and tired, no matter how much you sleep.

  • You react to things more emotionally; even small things set you off.

Surviving may get us from day to day, but it’s not ideal. We don’t just want to get by; we want to thrive.

What does thriving look like for you?

Thriving isn't the same for everyone. Thriving can be taking a challenge and turning it into a positive. Thriving is also appreciating the opportunities that life gives you.

Here are some examples of a thrive mindset:

  • You believe the future has something good to offer.

  • You can set goals that feel ambitious, yet achievable.

  • You can set aside time to meet with friends or learn a new skill.

  • You can maintain a healthy sleep schedule.

  • You make decisions you know are healthy--showering, eating a healthy diet, exercising--even if they don’t have immediate effect.

You don’t have to always be happy or positive to be in a thriving state of time. It is what you do in the acceptance of that moment that dictates your journey.

How can you transition from survival mode to a thriving mindset?

So how can you transition from survival to thriving? Remember, survival mode is a mindset that takes time and practice to adjust. It will take time, but there are concrete steps you can take today to get started, such as:

  • Be kind to yourself. You can’t “tough love” yourself out of survival mode, so don’t beat yourself up while you’re already down.

  • Acknowledge when something isn’t working. As we evolve, the path isn’t always smooth. It is ok to acknowledge when you need to pivot. That isn’t failure, it is learning.

  • Make one small change at a time. If you try to fix everything at once, you’ll likely get overwhelmed right out of the gate. When you find yourself in a challenging state, give yourself space to process, but don’t dwell in that state. Be intentional in finding your positive mindset.

  • Reach out. Our Listeners are here to support you on your path to thriving. Having an empathetic sounding board can be just the boost you need to reach your goal.
